Lizebertus was a pharmacist and lived with his wife, father and two children above the store. Hiding fugitives was especially dangerous for Lizebertus because of the large number of customers who passed through the store on a daily basis. Consequently, he arranged his house in such a way that the Juilards, and later other Jews too, could be hidden with little chance of being either noticed or discovered in the event of a house search. At the end of 1943, Henriëtte Malchi-Mendels, Hennie's sister, arrived at the Bochoves' home after her previous hideout had become unsafe. Henriëtte had been given the address by Ans, a friend of Hennie's who was also hiding with the Bochoves. Lizebertus and Annie welcomed the new fugitive into their home without hesitation, but they could only shelter her temporarily because there was simply not enough room. About a week later, Lizebertus found a new hideout for Henriëtte, also in Huizen, where she stayed until the end of the war. From then on, Lizebertus visited Henriëtte regularly and provided her hosts with food coupons and some pocket money. He also ensured that Henriëtte could visit Samuel and Hennie from time to time and always offered her encouragement. Despite Annie's poor health, and having to take care of two young children and Lizebertus's father, she never floundered in her efforts to make the atmosphere in her home pleasant and conditions congenial. During the hunger winter, when there was no food available in Huizen, Annie journeyed by bicycle, against doctor's orders, to the eastern provinces to purchase food from farmers. The Bochoves acted out of empathy with persecuted people and never asked for any financial compensation. On January 28, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Lizebertus Bochove and his wife, Johanna Hendrika Bochove-Smits, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
