(van Teyn) During the war, Jeanne van den Bergh saved Jews from persecution in Nieuwlande, Drenthe. This information is based on the testimony of Arnold Douwes*, the initiator and indefatigable organizer of the project for hiding Jews in the area, and Nico (Max LĂ©ons), a young Jew from Voorburg, South Holland, who was his faithful assistant. Between 1943 and 1945, Douwes kept a diary in which he mentioned Jeanne among the people who helped to hide Jews. On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Jeanne van den Bergh-van Teyn as Righteous Among the Nations. |
