Aantekeningen:	Mart Benders - Reconstructie van een vader (2019) Benders begon op zijn werk als leraar Nederlands en Geschiedenis aan het Amsterdams Lyceum te Amsterdam samen met een aantal oudere leerlingen stamkaarten en distributiekaarten te vervalsen, zodat Joodse leerlingen en hun familie deportatie konden ontlopen. Ook zijn echtgenote, de logopedist Gerritdina Benders-Letteboer was hierbij betrokken. Hun huis in Amstelveen stelden zij open als onderduikadres voor tijdelijke onderduikers en voor een aantal permanente onderduikers. Twee oud-leerlingen, de Joodse zusjes Rosalie Wijnberg en Katie Wijnberg, die bij hun tante woonden omdat hun ouders in Nederlands-Indië verbleven, kwamen bij hen wonen en bleven tot het eind van de oorlog. In 1943 kwam een ander Joods meisje, Lore Polak er bij. Op 4 april 1943 werden ze echter door hun buren verraden en de Sicherheitsdienst arresteerde Johan, Katie en Lore. Johan werd opgesloten in de gevangenis aan de Amstelveenseweg te Amsterdam op de verdenking van een overval op het registratiekantoor. Hij had in zijn zak de adressen van achttien ondergedoken Joden. Na een gesprek met zijn celgenoot, de dichter Gerrit Kouwenaar poogde hij tot tweemaal toe in zijn cel zelfmoord te plegen om niet "door te slaan" tijdens de ondervragingen waarbij hij hevig werd gemarteld. Dit lukte echter niet. Uiteindelijk slaagde hij er in op 16 april 1943 uit het raam van zijn cel op de derde verdieping te springen en kwam hierbij om. De leerlingen van zijn school besloten hierop hun leraar te herdenken en hielden een mars langs de gevangenis waarbij ze het schoollied floten. Gerritdina bleef achter met hun twee jonge dochters en was vijf maanden zwanger. Toch nam zij een ander Joods meisje op en herbergde ook Jan Doedens, een oud-leerling van haar man die aan de gedwongen Arbeitseinsatz wilde ontkomen. Ze slaagde er ook in om Lore Polak terug te vinden. Deze was na haar arrestatie doorgestuurd naar kamp Westerbork maar was daar ontsnapt en elders opgevangen. Ook Katie Wijnberg kwam na een paar weken gevangenschap terug naar Gerritdina. Na de oorlog bleek dat Lore's gehele familie was vermoord in de concentratiekampen zodat zij nog vier jaar bij Gerritdina bleef wonen waarna zij naar Amerika emigreerde. In Amsterdam werd na de oorlog een straat naar Johan Benders vernoemd. Op 27 maart 1997 ontving het echtpaar Benders postuum de Yad Vashem-onderscheiding die in mei 1998 tijdens een ceremonie in het Amsterdams Lyceum werd uitgereikt aan hun nabestaanden. He was a teacher at the Amsterdam Lyceum where he had made no secret of his anger over the expulsion of Jews from the school. Benders had encouraged the older students, such as Tineke Guilonard*, to become involved in the falsification of identity and ration cards. Johan’s wife, Gerritdina, who worked as a speech therapist, assisted wherever possible, and the couple opened their home as a temporary shelter for Jews. Johan and Gerritdina also took in two Jewish sisters, Rosalie and Katie Wijnberg, whose parents were in the Dutch East Indies, and who had been staying with their aunt. Both girls were former pupils of Johan and remained with the Benders until the end of the war, despite the fact that their aunt could no longer afford to pay for their upkeep. In 1943, the couple welcomed another Jewish girl, Lore Polak, into the family. On April 4, 1943, the Benders were betrayed by one of their neighbors and the SD arrested Johan, Katie, and Lore. Johan was locked up in the Amstelveenseweg prison on suspicion of having robbed the registrar’s office. In his pocket were the coded addresses of eighteen hidden Jews. He was brutally tortured during his interrogations and tried to commit suicide without success on two occasions. After speaking with his cellmate, poet Gerrit Kouwenaar, Johan decided to sacrifice his own life in order not to denounce those whom he had rescued. On April 6, 1943, he jumped to his death from the third floor of the prison. Gerritdina was left with their two young daughters and was five months pregnant with a third baby at the time. In a heart-rending requiem for their dead teacher, many of Johan’s former students marched passed the jail whistling the school tune. Despite the tragedy, Gerritdina took in another Jewish girl and sheltered Jan Doedens, a former pupil of Johan’s who was avoiding forced labor. She also tracked down Lore Polak, who had escaped from a concentration camp to another hideout. Katie Wijnberg was released after a few weeks in prison and came to live with Gerritdina again. After the war, Lore discovered that her entire family had perished and she thus stayed with Gerritdina for four years until she immigrated to the United States. A street in Amsterdam has been named in memory of Johan Benders. On March 27, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Johan Benders and his wife, Gerritdina Benders-Letterboer, as Righteous Among the Nations.
